When action-packed thrillers are the talk of the town, Jason Statham’s name is often thrown into the ring. With his latest Netflix debut in November, the 2011 film The Mechanic offers another hard-hitting escapade for the British action star and it’s always a joy to see the late Donald Sutherland.

This film, a revitalised remake of the 1972 classic starring Charles Bronson, and invites audiences to revisit a tale wrapped in adrenaline, stealth, and moral grey zones.

Is it worth the pulse-pounding ride? Let’s delve deeper and find out if your memory of the 2011 film is fuzzy or this is going to be your first watch.

For my review, an updated one, I’m going to take the remake’s pros and cons while explaining where I think the balance exists enough to drown out the cons.

The Mechanic offers viewers a glimpse into the clandestine life of Arthur Bishop

Portrayed by the rugged and ever-charismatic Jason Statham, we get an action film that continues to pull audiences today. Known as a “mechanic” in the grim world of assassination, Bishop represents the upper echelon of kill-for-hire expertise—cold, calculating, and efficient.

The narrative kicks off with Bishop executing a well-orchestrated hit, setting a blistering pace that hardly lets up through its 90-minute run time.

Thematically, the film explores themes of loyalty, vengeance, and the nature of professionalism devoid of moral judgment. It’s a stark portrayal of the intersection between personal vendettas and business transactions. The tone of the film is unabashedly gritty and unapologetically brutal, aiming to keep its audience at the edge of their seats while challenging them to reflect on these broader sociopolitical themes.

In other words, it wants to keep viewers hooked and what else do we expect from a Statham action flick.

Could I say one negative? Maybe just one. Despite its stark presentation, the film sometimes teeters on the brink of cliché, mainly due to its odyssey into the murky world of contract killings frequently explored in cinema.

Somehow I did not experience this with the John Wick series but maybe that’s the shift in the narrative style for hitman films that jumped the genre. It’s best to view this film as being quite distant from the later John Wick films that you may try to compare to.

Jason Statham’s performance as Arthur Bishop is quintessential Statham

He’s a stoic, hard-edged professional who handles firearms with precision and rarely cracks a smile. His physicality and intense screen presence are undeniable, channeling the perfect mix of brooding introspection and gut-wrenching action that audiences have come to expect from him.

Sharing the screen with Statham is Ben Foster, playing Steve McKenna, the protégé with a chip on his shoulder and revenge on his mind. Foster imbues his character with a volatile unpredictability, which offers a compelling counterpoint to Statham’s measured resolve. His portrayal adds a chaotic energy to the film—just when you think you’ve figured him out, he surprises you with another layer of complexity.

Nevertheless, while the leads are engaging, the supporting characters seem to exist solely to nudge the plot forward, lacking depth and often falling into predictable character archetypes.

Director Simon West helms the film with a steady hand

He balances the explosive action sequences with quieter, tense moments that build suspense. West, known for crafting high-octane narratives, doesn’t shy away from utilising the urban landscapes to heighten the visual experience.

From sleek penthouses to gritty industrial docks, the contrasting environments add visual flair and texture to the narrative.

The cinematography, courtesy of Eric Schmidt, uses shadows and stark lighting to emphasise the moral mysteries at play. While the film’s vibrant aesthetics are commendable, there are moments where it feels like style overtakes substance, occasionally disrupting the narrative flow.

The score by composer Mark Isham is a pulse-pounding affair

The score…WOW. It punctuates the film’s high-tension sequences with an urgency that mirrors the protagonists’ furious quests. Its rhythmic intensity provides an immersive experience, though at times it drowns out the more subtle moments where silence might have amplified Bishop’s internal conflicts.

Editing by T.G. Herrington is brisk and seamless, skillfully piecing together a series of meticulously choreographed set-pieces without disorienting the audience. The pace is relentless, with only a few quiet interludes that allow for character introspection and plot development.

Script-wise, The Mechanic offers a tight, no-nonsense approach

The dialogue is concise, aligning with the film’s overall minimalist yet muscular aesthetic. Bishop’s words are often sparse and impactful, reflecting the character’s efficient and undistracted nature.

However, the screenplay occasionally stumbles over clunky exposition, with characters explaining motivations rather than letting actions speak for themselves.

Upon landing on Netflix, The Mechanic has once again thrust itself into the limelight

Once again, as in 2011, the film is sparking discussions among both action aficionados and casual viewers. For some, the film’s visceral momentum and Statham’s commanding performance are its standout features, making it a thrilling watch.

For others, its stumbles into familiar action tropes and underdeveloped secondary characters render it just another predictable ride in the action-thriller genre. But to be clear, I find it a fun ride; one I can do again and again in spite of its shortcomings. I’ve felt that way about so many action films from Speed in the 90s to the latest John Wick film. However, I don’t fully see predictability as a negative as it’s nice to be both surprised and gain that ‘met my expectations’ high point after a film.

Viewers have resonated strongly with the film’s unyielding pace and raw action sequences, appreciating its commitment to high-stakes escapism. Yet, it has faced criticism for its lack of nuance, particularly in its handling of ethical dilemmas intrinsic to the narrative of a hitman who lives by a code.

We’ve seen umpteen films before 2011 and since that take this big hero with a code narrative journey.

We still want them.

The Mechanic remains true to its explosive roots

The film offers a robust reinterpretation of the 1972 classic with modern flair and intensity. While it falls short in some areas, particularly in character development and thematic depth, its strengths lie in delivering a non-stop action ride helmed by the reliable Jason Statham.

This film’s arrival on Netflix has rekindled interest in its legacy—a testament to the enduring appeal of stories that dwell in moral ambiguity and relentless pursuit of vengeance.

For viewers ready for an adrenaline-fueled evening, whether seen it r not, The Mechanic is a finely-tuned thriller that doesn’t merely think outside the box—it blows the box wide open.

Eddie Redmayne’s portrayal of the Jackal is, quite simply, spellbinding. Redmayne captures the cold, methodical nature of the assassin with an unsettling calm, his ability to vanish into new identities rendering him a ghostly enigma. This performance cements Redmayne’s status as a versatile actor, adept at delivering nuanced, layered roles.

Lashana Lynch, as British intelligence officer Bianca, is a revelation. Her character is imbued with an unrelenting drive that borders on the reckless, yet Lynch grounds Bianca with a relatable emotional core. The interplay between Redmayne and Lynch is electric, their scenes crackling with intensity and hinting at deeper psychological undercurrents.

Supporting roles are equally noteworthy. Ursula Corbero’s rendition of Nuria, the unsuspecting partner of the Jackal, adds a humanising touch to the otherwise icy narrative. Richard Dormer and Charles Dance lend gravitas to their roles, anchoring the series with seasoned performances.

Visually, “The Day of the Jackal” is a feast for the senses

Filmed across multiple European locales including London, Budapest, and Croatia, the series leverages its settings to heighten the tension and drama.

The cinematography, executed with a keen eye for detail, captures both the stark beauty and the gritty realism of its environments. It conjures a sense of place that is as vital to the series as any of its characters.

The direction, while generally praiseworthy, occasionally veers towards the conventional. Certain chase sequences, though impeccably staged, lack the innovative flair that could elevate the series from good to great.

Yet, these moments are few and far between, and largely, the series maintains a compelling pace and an atmosphere thick with tension.

The score, a spine-tingling orchestral arrangement

And complements the series’ tense narrative perfectly. It swells at crucial moments to accentuate the drama, yet knows when to retreat, allowing the visuals and performances to take centre stage.

The production design is meticulously crafted, from the austere interiors of intelligence offices to the bustling, labyrinthine streets of European cities. It’s a world that feels lived-in, authentic, and delightfully elaborate.

The use of special effects is sparing but effective

Thus maintaining the series’ grounding in a realistic depiction of its world. Explosions and fight sequences are rendered with a visceral authenticity, heightening the stakes without overshadowing the narrative’s emotional beats.

Editing-wise, “The Day of the Jackal” is adept at balancing multiple narrative threads, weaving them together in a manner that feels both coherent and engaging. However, there are moments where the pacing stumbles, particularly in the mid-season episodes that risk meandering. Tightening these segments could have maintained a more consistent momentum.

The dialogue in “The Day of the Jackal” vacillates between sharp and poignant

Though it occasionally dips into melodrama. Characters are given the space to articulate their inner turmoil, which deepens the viewer’s understanding and investment in their arcs.

The overall tone of the series is one of brooding intensity, interspersed with brief moments of levity that prevent it from becoming overly dour.

In its essence, “The Day of the Jackal” is a series that thrives on suspense and psychological intricacy. It’s a show that beckons viewers to the edge of their seats, drawing them into a world where every move can be a matter of life and death.

Fans of the original book and film will appreciate the respectful homage and fresh elements, while new viewers can dive into a taut, well-executed thriller.

Though not without its flaws, the series succeeds in creating a gripping narrative replete with compelling characters, stunning visuals, and a score that haunts long after the final note. It’s a tale that resonates, reminding us of the relentless pursuit of justice and the shadows in which some choose to dwell.

A must-watch for those who savour their thrillers with a side of cerebral depth.

Horror movie remakes have become a prevalent trend, often drawing inspiration from European, Japanese and Asian cinema. Many of your favourite horror remake movies may feel hauntingly familiar for that reason but what was the actual source.

For many of the original films, the source was a novel.

Hollywood is renowned for browsing through world cinema titles for that next blood-curdling gem. Adaptations tend to get greenlit more than most when producers dig for ideas. Perhaps the logic is that the adaptation pulls an established interest in the story, a growing market, a built-in ready to go audience.

This is important particularly if another production resulted in a loss and less of a risk is needed. Also, buying the rights to remake a film, based on a book or not, is likely to be cheaper than buying full rights to a new book.

Another reason is connecting an updated US version of the film with modern audiences. These audiences prefer to avoid subtitled films and feel more comfortable away from a cultural disconnect.

And it’s therefore about the money. Big shocker. Horror remakes bring floods of audiences to cinemas. It’s a cash cow that producers cannot easily ignore.

And a horror movie remake done well is worth a terrifying night in. And cinema audiences know it.

So, which ones started as a book?

Let’s take a look at 14 of these spine-chilling remake movies connections. And which of them were based on a novel i.e. started as adaptations. Which of these remakes thrilled and terrified you?

As movie enthusiasts, we often find ourselves captivated by the world of book-to-film adaptations. There’s something magical about seeing our favourite stories come to life as an adaptation on the big screen.

But have you ever wondered what happens when a book gets adapted into a film not just once, but twice?

Is the second film considered a remake or an adaptation?

Let’s dive into this intriguing question and explore the nuances between the two. When a book is adapted into a movie, it raises questions about whether later films based on the book are remakes or adaptations.

Understanding The Adaptation Formula

An adaptation aims to faithfully bring the story to life. This often brings adjustments to fit the medium of film while staying true to the core themes and characters. The success of “The Lord of the Rings” and “Gone Girl” proved that preserving a book’s essence is crucial for a successful adaptation.

The film industry frequently makes adaptations. Filmmakers take inspiration from books, breathing life into the words and characters we hold dear.

An adaptation aims to capture the essence of the source material while making necessary changes for the visual medium. Think of the sweeping epics like “The Lord of the Rings” or the thrilling mystery of “Gone Girl.” These successful adaptations have shown us the power of staying true to the core themes and characters of a book.

The film seeks to embrace the unique storytelling possibilities of movie production.

Exploring Why Remakes Happen

But then we have remakes—a different beast altogether. A remake takes an existing film and retells its story, often with updated visuals and technology. This may include a completely different creative vision. Good examples are “Dawn of the Dead” and “Total Recall”.

Colin Farrell, Kate Beckinsale, and Jessica Biel starred in the 2012 film Total Recall, which was directed by Len Wiseman. The movie is a remake of the same-named 1990 film, both of which were inspired by Philip K. Dick’s short story “We Can Remember It for You Wholesale” from 1966.

“Dawn of the Dead” is a remake of George A. Romero’s 1978 film of the same name. The 2004 horror movie, which was directed by Zack Snyder, has a fresh plot while maintaining the spirit of the original.

It’s like a fresh coat of paint on a classic masterpiece. We’ve seen countless examples of remakes, from the multiple incarnations of “A Star Is Born” to the ever-evolving “King Kong.” Remakes allow filmmakers to reintroduce familiar stories to new audiences. This reproduction take then breathes new life into beloved tales.

But of course, here at ROR, we accept that not every cloud has a silver lining. There are poor remakes and some have deterred audiences from watching remakes altogether.

Fortunately, there are more diamonds over the years, despite nothing but sawdust in recent months.

Mr Coat over on YouTube covered the distinct if at times blurred differences between remakes and adaptations causing the confusion. Is it a remake or an adaptation? Mr Coat explains perfectly from a video he made shortly before Annie, 8 years ago.

The Fine Line: Second Adaptation as a Remake

So, where does a second adaptation of a book-based film fall? Can we consider it a remake?

Well, that’s where things get interesting. I could see a second adaptation as just another adaptation of the source material. Although, it can be considered a remake of the first movie on some occasions. The filmmakers’ creative choices are what matters in the end.

Imagine this scenario: two different directors independently adapt the same book.

The result?

Two distinct adaptations, as each director brings their unique vision to the project. If the second adaptation copies the style and story of the first film, it’s a remake.

The publisher Norstedts Förlag had a hit with Stieg Larsson’s “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”, which was also adapted into a film. Knopf, a division of Penguin Random House did later produce the United States publication. The late Reg Keeland translated the book into English and adapted into two feature films, one in Swedish and one in English. He was a well-known translator of crime novels and this adaptation was darker and grittier.

Right up Fincher’s street.

The 2011 David Fincher-directed movie is renowned for its stunning cinematography and compelling performances from the main actors Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig. Mara was nominated for an Academy Award for her portrayal of Lisbeth Salander, which won praise from critics.

David Fincher suited this project as he loves to spin his own vision of a tale. He tried on the set of Alien 3 only to get his ideas butchered by execs. He’s wanted to show his vision of a story and tends to pick up any chance to do it while staying true to the source material. We’ve seen his notable works and artistically stunning view of a story in films like “Fight Club,” “Gone Girl,” “The Social Network,” and “Se7en,”.

Great then that he took a shot at adapting the same material for his take on the “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” story. I can only imagine that it must have thrilled him to be the director of the film. Fincher’s version of a remake pulled the audiences because of its stylistic and tonal similarities with the Swedish film. Great way forward to where a built-in fan base already existed of the books and the Swedish original.

And his remake found new audiences.

He’s probably the perfect choice for a movie remake project, particularly thrillers and horror. He loves to explore dark and complex themes, pushing the boundaries of storytelling and engaging viewers on an emotional level.

So based on the visionary talent of the director chosen for a remake project, how do we look at further adaptations? The similarity in approach raises the question: Is it a continuation of the story or a reinterpretation of something already brought to life?

Factors Influencing Classification To Make It All Clear

We have to consider various factors. The director, creative team, and time period can all significantly influence how the film is perceived.

A different director may provide a new interpretation of the source material, making it a second adaptation. If a considerable amount of time has passed between the two films, many differences will hit the cinema. These include changes in technology, cultural context, and filmmaking trends. This can and has resulted in a distinct portrayal, making it easier to classify as a new adaptation.

In the end, a remake or an adaptation category for the film lies within the film itself. Adaptations strive to capture the essence of a written work, while remakes retell a story previously portrayed on the screen.

However, the fine line between the two becomes blurred when a second adaptation closely mimics the style, plot, or characters of the first film. It’s a fascinating discussion that offers insights into the creative choices made by filmmakers as they bring beloved stories to life.

Therefore, the next time you are charmed by a movie that is the second adaptation of a beloved novel, consider whether or not it’s a remake.

Or is it just another way to tell a tale that keeps resonating with viewers? The answer may just open up a whole new world of cinematic appreciation.

Today, we’re going to delve into the shimmering world of the new live-action Barbie movie and unravel the reason behind its recent “remake” status. Buckle up, grab your popcorn, and get ready for a nostalgic ride down Barbie memory lane!

(featured image sourced from https://highoncinemaa.com)

And why it’s set to be a success upon its opening date of July 21st.

According to Deadline’s June review, as of June 29, 2023, the opening weekend box office projections for the Barbie movie are between $80 million to $100 million in the United States alone.

That’s quite WOW!

Note, though, that these are projected figures. They will fluctuate of course because of the costs of marketing campaigns and the potential competition on its release in cinemas.

So, onto the remake status of what might be the Summer’s big comedy fantasy hit!

The first Barbie movie teaser trailer says it all really!

Barbie is not just a mere doll; it’s a cultural phenomenon

Barbie is a popular toy brand that was introduced in 1959 by the company Mattel. The iconic Barbie doll has become a cultural icon and recognised worldwide. Barbie has undergone many transformations over the years. Changes that reflect different professions, ethnicities, and body types.

The idea behind Barbie was to inspire young girls and encourage them to imagine and explore different roles and careers. And the Barbie movie will likely make this a focus.

For decades, this iconic figure has captured the hearts of young girls and inspired them to dream big, “reach for the stars”, and break down gender barriers. With her ever-evolving style, Barbie has set trends. The doll challenged beauty standards and represented empowerment and female independence.

Did you experience childhood playdates where Barbie became the hero of your imaginary adventures?

Barbie taught us that imagination knows no bounds. It’s a great storytelling tool to clarify that barriers can be broken. Be anything you want to be. That’s a potent message for an adolescent mind. She’s appeared in all guises from astronauts to fashion designers to world-saving princesses. She instilled a sense of confidence and ambition in generations of young girls, igniting a fiery passion that still burns bright today.

Image sourced from British Vogue – Amazing costume design from Jacqueline Durran

What makes Barbie, this beloved cultural icon, a glossy remake?

Since 2001, a plethora of animated Barbie films have made their way into our nostalgia-studded hearts. These cinematic gems have featured various visual styles and storytelling approaches. Each film left its own indelible mark on the Barbie universe.

The newest addition is a live action Barbie movie and promises a fresh take on the iconic character that fans know and love.

So, what’s going to differ from its animated predecessors?

For starters, it’s clear from the teaser trailers and the final full trailer that Barbie 2023 presents a jaw-dropping visual feast. One that utilises cutting-edge animation technology to transport us into a wonderland of colours, textures, and dazzling depths. It’s looking like a visual extravaganza that pushes the boundaries of what we thought was possible in the Barbie universe; while connecting with our own.

But it’s not just about the visuals.

Barbie 2023 will introduce narrative innovations that breathe new life into the story. I’m expecting deeper character development, a more intricate narrative structure, and themes that resonate with our ever-evolving world.

I hope to experience a testament to the filmmakers’ dedication to honouring the essence of Barbie while infusing it with a fresh, modern twist.

Come August, I may have to update my top 20 movie remakes list.

Image sourced from Coming Soon

Let’s not forget Ken

Ken joins Barbie as she faces her existential reawakening and journeys to the real world with her. What’s Barbie without Ken? You may say.

He was introduced as a doll companion for Barbie in 1961. He was named after Kenneth Handler, the son of Barbie’s creator, Ruth Handler. Ken served as a male counterpart to Barbie, providing a companion for her and reflecting on the concept of a balanced relationship.

He represents a boyfriend or romantic partner for Barbie. Ken is what embodies masculinity and represents the idea of a supportive and fashionable boyfriend. And I mean fashionable dolls. He brought with him a contemporary style with a wide range of clothing options and accessories.

Introducing Ken as Barbie’s companion expanded the play possibilities and storylines for Barbie. It therefore makes sense to have the character travel with Barbie on her journey. He allowed children to engage in imaginative play centred around relationships and dating. This was a breakthrough concept in the dolls industry.

And the Barbie movie writers have not forgotten that.

The animated films left sparkles in the imagination of young girls

Since 2001, there have been lots of animated Barbie films. Since 2016, there has been a film every year broken only by the pandemic period.

Barbie: Spy Squad (2016)

Barbie: Star Light Adventure (2016)

Barbie & Her Sisters in a Puppy Chase (2016)

Barbie Video Game Hero (2017)

Barbie: Dolphin Magic (2017)

Barbie: Princess Adventure (2020)

You can look at the full list here on Wikipedia.

So the film joins the enchanting world of remakes. The core of this site’s focus where beloved characters are reinvented and reimagined. And where those characters will be reintroduced to captivate a whole new generation of fans.

Barbie 2023 is not just looking like a live-action remake of a long running franchise; the trailers tell of a marvellous tribute to the enduring legacy of a global sensation. So I expect the film to spark joy, ignite imagination, and remind us of the power of dreams. Whether you’re a die-hard Barbie aficionado or a casual movie-goer seeking an escape into a world of wonder, this film is looking to be a must-see.

How will her attributes appeal to families of movie-goers and young audiences today?

It’s not just the captivating stories that make the Barbie animated films stand out; it’s the empowering messages they convey to young minds eager to dream and believe in themselves. Each film serves as a reminder that girls can conquer any challenge, break through barriers, and embrace their true potential.

One of Barbie’s greatest strengths is her ability to adapt and grow with the times. Through the years, the Barbie films have celebrated diversity and inclusivity. They have presented characters from different backgrounds and cultures. From princesses to mermaids, each film showcases a kaleidoscope of unique stories and characters. This was important in highlighting the beauty of our colourful world.

In this film, she sets out to try to understand what’s real and what is not. Basically, a crisis sending her on a journey of self-discovery. And that is a wonderful aspect to explore in a character that aims to inspire.

Barbie suffers a crisis that leads her to question her world and her existence. A realisation that nothing is truly perfect except in the eyes of the beholder. This existential realisation sends her on a journey to the real world to find out what is real.

It’s a thought-provoking premise for sure. One that teaches kids not to be afraid to explore themselves, figure things out and make room for self-discovery.

Barbie has never been one to conform to societal expectations, and the films reflect this rebellious spirit. Whether it’s Barbie trading her crown for a tool belt in “Barbie: Princess Charm School” or leading a group of musketeers in “Barbie and the Three Musketeers,” these films challenge gender stereotypes. At the same time, there is a valuable lesson being taught. Anyone can aspire to be the hero. It is nothing to do with gender, it applies to all. It’s a message that when reinforced well, will resonate with today’s audiences.

Through her various career choices in the films, Barbie serves as a role model for young girls, encouraging them to dream big and chase their ambitions. From a veterinarian to a fashion designer, a chef to a spy, Barbie shows girls they can aspire. They can aspire to be anything in life in this increasingly diverse and challenged world.

She ignites a fiery passion within young girls, reminding them that their dreams are within reach if dared to pursue them.

Let’s look at some of those films prior to the live action remake

Since 2001, the Barbie films have taken young girls on a whirlwind ride through various tales. Each film infused with imagination, heart, and a dash of that signature Barbie magic. And this seems to be at the core of the new film.

Let’s take a peek. What will fans want to see in the live action Barbie movie?

Barbie in the Nutcracker: Twirling into the Magical World

The adventure begins with “Barbie in the Nutcracker,” a delightful retelling of the classic holiday tale. Yes, that one. The young ones’ imaginations soared as high as their ballet leaps. A world of wonder, of magical lands, dancing snowflakes, and a dashing Nutcracker prince. It’s a whimsical start to a cinematic journey.

Barbie as Rapunzel: Letting Down Her Hair and Breaking Barriers

The films then moved to “Barbie as Rapunzel,”. Here, our beloved fashionista-turned-princess lets down her long, luscious locks and defies all odds. Through this reimagined classic fairy tale, Barbie teaches us the importance of inner strength. Beyond that, her actions show creativity, and how to embrace our unique talents. With every brushstroke and melody, the writers showed young audiences that true beauty lies within.

I envisage this will be a key message in the new movie.

Barbie of Swan Lake: Dancing to the Rhythm of Your Heart

In the enchanting realm of “Barbie of Swan Lake,” the ethereal grace of ballet and the power of belief, a new somewhat darker story goes ahead. Barbie, transformed into a beautiful swan by an evil sorceress, embarks on a quest to break the spell and discover her destiny. The film’s core message reminded the little ones gazing at the screen at home on how to trust their hearts. And how to hold that trust, even in the face of darkness, and to dance fearlessly into their dreams.

Enlightening and inspiring messages for young girls. I expect we’ll see a similar vein in the new fantasy movie.

However, Barbie has also faced criticism. Has the movie addressed this?

Barbie was lambasted over the years for promoting unrealistic beauty standards. The argument being one of reinforcing gender stereotypes. Barbie’s unrealistic body proportions and focus on appearance are said to hurt girls’ self-esteem and body image.

Despite the controversy, Barbie continues to be a beloved toy for many children around the world. The brand has expanded to include various accessories, clothing, and play sets. This allows children to create their own imaginative worlds. Barbie also offers online games, movies, and TV shows to further engage with their audience.

Moreover, Barbie has taken steps to address the concerns regarding body image and diversity. In recent years, the brand has released dolls with different body shapes. This also included varied skin tones and hairstyles, to preclude a focus that would alienate many people. It’s expected that the film will hold a candle up to this move to promote inclusivity and representation.

Barbie has had a significant impact on popular culture and has been both praised and criticised for various reasons. While it continues to be a beloved toy for many children, it is important to consider the broader implications of dolls like Barbie.

Today’s audiences want to see the film industry strive for more inclusive and realistic representations.

Are you dazzled by the glimmering magic of Barbie 2023 or just expecting a darn good comedy of sparkles and silly quips?

For those ladies who owned a Barbie doll in their youth, it’s a journey that will likely transport you back to your childhood. It will be a journey for you. And leave you recalling those early years as a starry-eyed kid. And that will be a big contributor to its success: the timeless power of Barbie.

For the rest of the audiences considering giving this a whirl, I feel this will be the tongue-quite-firmly-in-cheek fantasy comedy film to watch.

Are you looking forward to what is likely to be satirical brilliance and an iconic remake? Barbie leaves Barbieland’s dream house for the real world on July 21st.

The highly anticipated live-action remake of Disney’s beloved classic, The Little Mermaid, made its way to the big screen recently. However, despite the immense excitement surrounding its release, the film has failed to make the waves Disney had hoped for.

Let’s delve into the real reason behind The Little Mermaid’s underwhelming performance. Let us go beyond the typical blame game and explore the true factors at play.

Disney’s live-action remake of The Little Mermaid has been making waves around the world.

However, the film’s journey has hit troubled waters in fan circles, in China, and as a production.

In Asia, a very different and more sensitive issue occurred. It faced a lacklustre response because of racist backlash.

Early on, the film suffered from review bombing, leading to negative reviews before its release. Was it the cumulative effect of The Little Mermaid’s underperformance in China, the impact of racist critiques, and the consequences of review bombing on the film’s early reputation….

….That caused it to flop.

The numbers don’t lie

The Little Mermaid, with its high production budget, has failed to impress at the box office. Comparing its earnings to other Disney live-action remakes tells an obvious story of underperformance.

This begs the question: what went wrong?

The film made $95.6 million dollars in its opening weekend. Oh dear! If that sounds a lot, I’ll add that is less than 35% of its total gross as of May. Though, it picked up and with a production budget of $250,000,000, it broke even. As of July 5th, it has gone further and reached takings of $285,000,000.

Sounds okay on the surface – eventually. But not a massive profit; not one befitting a Disney production.

Pretty thin.

Photo sourced from The Times

A significant division among fans has emerged regarding the film’s reception. One faction believes that race is a factor, as the casting of Halle Bailey, an African-American actress, as Ariel, drew mixed reactions. However, it is crucial to note that a significant number of fans passionately support the casting choice, appreciating the diversity it brings to the iconic character.

The film made a disappointing box office take over Memorial Day weekend. This toxic response was primarily attributed to the racist critiques and questions surrounding the casting choice of a black actress as Ariel.

But we can’t tar all viewers with the same brush in this way.

As on the other hand, another group of fans simply views the movie as a disappointment. The performances were frowned at, and the CGI looked quite flat in many underwater scenes during early trailers. There’s a definitive argument here that The Little Mermaid’s unappreciated performance is not a result of any social or racial controversy but due to the film failing to live up to expectations.

This divide in fan opinion highlights the complexity of the issue at hand.

Disney is on one of its worst-ever runs at the box office, and things could be about to get a lot worse

The Impact of Racist Backlash in China

Despite receiving a mixed response in the United States, things developed differently in the far East. Halle Bailey’s casting as Ariel was hailed as refreshing and a positive step toward representation for many viewers in the US and Europe.

But, The Little Mermaid faced a chilly reception in China.

Fan objections surfaced on popular Chinese movie review websites, with some expressing disappointment with Bailey’s casting. Users on Douban, a prominent movie review platform, scored the film just 5.1 out of 10.

Certain users made discriminatory comments regarding Bailey’s skin colour, while others expressed puzzlement, stating that Ariel should be “White” in their minds. Chinese state media also questioned the casting, framing it as an issue of forced inclusion and questioning the storytelling strategy of Disney.

But hold on, that’s not the sole reason worldwide

There is another reason outside of race swaps, performances and the CGI effects.

One undeniable factor contributing to the film’s lack of success is fan fatigue. Something also quite clear in the superhero universe across Marvel and DC with a weakened interest in watching superhero stories.

And live action remakes have hit the same roadblock.

Over the past several years, Disney has inundated audiences with a series of live-action remakes, from Beauty and the Beast to Aladdin and The Lion King. The repetitiveness of these adaptations has caused some fans to long for fresh and original stories rather than just rehashed versions of beloved classics.

So, what can Disney do to reignite fans’ interest in their live-action remakes?

One potential solution lies in revisiting forgotten or lesser-known Disney films. By shining a light on hidden gems from their vast inventory of stories, Disney could bring something new and exciting to audiences.

Disney could consider branching out beyond their own properties and gaining new intellectual properties. This would offer fans the opportunity to experience fresh narratives and characters while still enjoying the magic Disney has become known for.

Review Bombing and its Consequences

Apart from facing racist backlash, The Little Mermaid was also subjected to review bombing, a practice in which users intentionally leave negative reviews to lower a title’s rating.

This affected the film’s IMDb score, leading to a warning about “unusual voting activity” and adjustments to the ratings calculation. Review bombing can have a significant impact on a film’s early reputation, influencing audience perception before they form their own opinions.

The troubling rise of review bombing

Consequences for the Film’s Overall Performance

The underwhelming performance of The Little Mermaid in China is likely to be the straw that broke the production’s back in its early days of release. A huge detrimental effect on its global box office earnings. China’s position as the world’s second-largest box office market makes its contribution vital to the overall success of a movie.

With the film making only $3.6 million in China compared to its strong domestic and international earnings, the impact of the racist backlash becomes evident.

So, what is Disney’s Response and Director’s Stance?

Disney and the film’s director, Rob Marshall, have not directly addressed the controversy surrounding the racist backlash. Marshall has reiterated that Halle Bailey was selected based solely on her talent, highlighting her exceptional ability during the casting process.

Sadly, that changes zero here. The impact of the racist critiques and review bombing on the film’s performance became a pressing concern that calls for deeper reflection and response from the industry.

The underwhelming performance of The Little Mermaid is not due to a single factor alone

Rather, a combination of reasons has contributed to its dying reception. With fan fatigue setting in and the need for fresh stories becoming evident, it’s critical for Disney to rethink their approach to live-action remakes.

Without something drastic, it’s unlikely that these remakes will regain their initial novelty.

What does ROR think about this?

Disney needs to focus on creating original stories and exploring new properties to cater to fans’ thirst for innovative and captivating narratives. Only then can Disney’s live-action remakes recapture the magic that made them such a sensation in the first place.

The Little Mermaid’s struggles in China because of racist backlash and review bombing have highlighted the complexity of the film industry’s challenges in achieving representation and combating negative practices.

As China plays a significant role in the global box office, the film’s underperformance in this market is a setback for its overall success.

Moving forward, it becomes crucial for the industry to address these issues, fostering inclusion and combating review bombing to ensure that films are given a fair chance to impress audiences around the world.

James Cameron’s “Titanic”, the 1997 epic romance-disaster film, needs no introduction. It won numerous awards and became the highest-grossing film of all time until Cameron’s “Avatar” surpassed it in 2009.

In February this year, James Cameron released his remastered version of the film, a newly created 4K Ultra HD version and with additional changes.

The question on many fans’ minds is – was it worth watching and would I buy it for my 4k home TV?

The Remastered Version of “Titanic”

The remastered version of “Titanic” was released on Valentine’s Day this year. The remastered version features many changes and additions from the original. These changes include colour correction, contrast adjustments, and new special effects to improve the look of some scenes.

Is It Worth Buying if a 4K Disc was Available?

The question remains – is this remastered version worth watching for fans, or should they stick with the original? The answer is yes. Many critics have praised the remastered version for bringing even more depth and clarity to a film that was already praised for its visual effects and cinematography.

So, for those who missed the release in February 2023, what do you need to know too?

Don’t expect extra scenes. The big change is the audio coming through in Dolby Atmos Sound.

For fans of the original film, it is an opportunity to relive the epic romance between Jack and Rose in even greater detail. The newly created 4K Ultra HD version also offers a new level of visual clarity that was not possible with the original film.

This remaster is a perfect opportunity to watch “Titanic” in the best version possible. A reason to buy it once it can grace your 4K screen.

According to James Cameron, the remastering of “Titanic” was not an easy task. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Cameron spoke about the challenges he faced in remastering the film last year.

Cameron stated, “We went right back to the digital files that were created in 1997. Digital technology was then in its infancy and there were no 4K TVs,” Cameron added, “We had to do a bottom-up restoration of the film, and that required the restoration of 350,000 individual frames”.

The restoration process took nearly two years, with Cameron personally overseeing most of the changes.

‘Titanic’ Returning to Netflix, Some Say Too Soon After Titan Sub Tragedy

New Scenes?

One question that fans have been asking is whether the remastered version of “Titanic” contains any new scenes or footage. Unfortunately, the answer is no. The remastered version only features additional changes and improvements to the overall look and feel of the film from its 1997 digital age production date.

James Cameron’s remastered version of “Titanic” is definitely worth watching for any fan of the original.

And for fans, surely worth buying when out.

With the newly created 4K Ultra HD version, this classic continues to hold up and it gave fans a fresh cinematic experience during its theatrical release.

We love to watch movies. We love to watch them over and over again, and when we get bored with the old ones, there are always new ones coming out. But why do we find it so entertaining to watch a movie that’s been remade?

It can’t be because of the special effects or the cast or director…it must be something else!

Seems it can be due to one or all of those reasons.

A polished update may have some surprises. Did it work for films like Willy Wonka?

We like to see how a new director, writer or star interprets the story.

There is another thing that we like about movie remakes and it’s the interpretation of the story. We like seeing how each director, writer or star interprets a story in their own way.

A good example of this shows in Zack Snyder’s reimagining nail biter and chilling remake of Dawn Of The Dead. I think Romero approved!

We like it when an old movie gets updated with special effects that weren’t available back then.

This is a fun one, and it’s something you can do yourself to make your favourite movie more exciting. For example, this was an answer over on Quora when I asked. A guy there who loves remakes said something right off the wall yet on-the-nose enough to see what is intended, despite it not being acceptable as a Jaws movie,

let’s say you’re watching the original version of Jaws and one of the characters gets attacked by a shark in the water. That’s pretty scary—but what if instead of just being attacked, they were attacked by an army of sharks that look like they’re coming right at you? It will be even more fun than before!

Has that been done? Sure! Not remakes but there are more shark movies than you can shake a fin at…

So, what if a remake of Jaws used the same narrative but chose to up the ante for the protagonists. Lots of white sharks, and not just one.

Nah, as a serious remake. But maybe a YES for shark movie lovers…. However, fans of Jaws will never accept that.

I see that as an example of when remakes go wrong. The futile attempt to reinvent the wheel. We know that Jaws can’t be remade, and still shine enough to convince fans and stay true to the story. Today’s audiences surely should just watch the original.

So, that’s a film not to update in a hurry…. at all…. ever.

How about another example but again, kinda missed the mark.

The Day the Earth Stood Still remake is a film directed by Scott Derrickson and starring Keanu Reeves and Jennifer Connelly. The film is a remake of the 1951 classic by the same name, which starred Michael Rennie and Patricia Neal. The story centres around an alien visitor named Klaatu who lands on Earth and begins to learn about humanity as he attempts to persuade them to stop their violence and destruction of their planet.

The original movie was a hit in its day, earning an Oscar nomination for Best Writing (Motion Picture Story). It was also nominated for three Golden Globe Awards, including Best Motion Picture Drama. However, it never won any awards at those ceremonies or any other film festival.

The film received negative reviews from critics and was a box office flop. However, some fans were impressed with its action sequences and special effects. It currently holds a 43% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes and a 6/10 on IMDB.

What went wrong? Not what people expected it to be?

My take on that. The original version of the film was released in 1951 and has since become iconic, thanks to its special effects and message about nuclear weapons. This new version tried to stick to the same plotline as the original but failed because it did not have similar production value.

Keanu Reeves’ performance as Klaatu was described as one of the most wooden acting performances ever given by an A-list actor in a blockbuster movie. However, my issues lay solely with Jennifer Connelly doing nothing to help him out with her performance as Helen Benson, either; she seems about as excited about acting as Keanu did about acting in it!

But there’s a fine line here and this film does have a silver lining.

And that’s simply: Don’t compare to the 1951 film? I’ve found that comparing a remake to the original is the first step towards disliking it and spitting at your TV. Know it’s a remake and regard it as a new angle on the story.

Sometimes a remake comes out when we’re ready for the message of the movie in the here and now.

For example, the original The Wizard of Oz was remade in 1939 during The Great Depression. This is a time when people were losing their homes and jobs at an alarming rate. This movie’s message about home being a place where you belong had extra meaning for audiences.

But what about when Dorothy returned home, only to find that she wasn’t wanted there anymore? (Spoiler alert!) Or how about the scene where Dorothy tries to tell everyone how it feels like to be oppressed by your own family members? Is this something people could relate to back then?

In 1984’s Ghostbusters and 2016’s Ghostbusters, we see how technology has changed and evolved over 30 years but also that some things will always remain the same. Both versions show New York City being overrun by ghosts and aliens; however one version features three men fighting against this threat while another features four women doing so. Each remake shows us different ways that people can work together in order for them all get ahead in life despite challenges they may face along the way.”

Sometimes the original is just too old for younger generations to watch.

Sometimes the original is just too old for younger generations to watch. If you were born in the 90s, you’ve probably never seen The Wizard of Oz or Gone with the Wind. And if you have seen these movies, it’s likely that what remains in your memory is a faded impression that lacks much detail about what actually happened in them. Replacing these classics with modern takes on their stories means bringing them back into contemporary relevance—and giving more people access to them by doing so.

I have never successfully watched The Godfather (or any Roman Polanski film). I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with that; it’s just not for me personally! But for those who do like those films and want something new from them—but still want it to feel familiar enough—remakes are perfect options!

Remakes are fun to compare to their originals.

A remake is a great way to have fun comparing two versions of a story. One of the most common and obvious ways to do this is by taking a look at the original version and then comparing it with its remake.

It’s easy to get caught up in comparing them side-by-side, but another fun thing to do is compare them end-to-end: look at how one movie compares with another when you watch both back-to-back (or even just in sequence). You can see how they differ, what has stayed the same or changed over time, and whether or not your opinion changes on either after doing so.

It’s just fun! That’s all there is to it.

There are plenty of reasons why people like to watch movie remakes, but the fact that most modern audiences have a tendency to seek out older films and compare them with their remakes is one of the most obvious ones. It’s fun for us to see how much has changed in the past few decades or so, especially when it comes to technology and special effects.

Some people like watching old movies because they appreciate history—they want to see what life was like back then, whether it was better or worse than today. Others just enjoy comparing two versions of something they’re already familiar with (like “Casablanca” vs “Casablanca”). Still others may simply prefer newer versions over older ones because they feel they’re more accurate representations of reality (e.g., “Gone With The Wind” vs “The Hunger Games”).

Regardless of our reasons for watching them though, movies are still entertaining no matter what time period they’re set in!

It’s all a big game, and sometimes we like to play. If you’re looking for something new to watch, there are plenty of modern remakes out there, from classics like Psycho and The Birds to more recent films like The Legend Of Hercules and RoboCop. There’s no reason not to have fun with it!
